Goods & Services Tax: The Risks and Opportunities for Businesses

Navigating the GST/HST system can be challenging. With layers of rules and provisions that often seem counterintuitive, it’s not always clear where the risks lie — or where opportunities may be found.
In this session, we’ll explore practical scenarios and key questions, such as:
- When does a change-in-use of real property trigger tax consequences, and when is the fair market value applied rather than the original tax that was paid?
- In transactions between more than two people, who bears the responsibility for collecting and remitting GST/HST, and who can legitimately claim the input tax credits?
By stepping back and examining these issues through the lens of how the value-added tax system truly functions, you’ll learn to recognize when a compliance risk is present — and when an opportunity may be available.
Please note, the meal is a traditional Christmas Dinner (Turkey and all that good stuff). If you require a vegetarian meal, you must email me. Please ensure you actually take the vegetarian meal as the meals are ordered per your registration. No special meals will be accommodated on the day of the event. Thank you for your consideration of the Chateau Louis.
